About the Author
Mark Allan Powell is a Professor of New Testament at Trinity Lutheran Seminary and an internationally recognized theologian and Bible scholar. The author of more than 25 books and 100 articles, Dr Powell has served as a Visiting Professor at universities such as the University of California, Berkeley, Vanderbilt University, and the University of Chicago, as well as at schools in Estonia, Tanzania, and Russia. He is best known for his work in literary criticism, Matthean studies, and historical Jesus studies.

A great textbook

I have used Powell's book as a text for my undergraduate "Life and Teachings of Jesus" course during this past year. It is extremely well written and organized. Powell has a gift for presenting complex information in accessible form. The charts and tables in the book are particularly helpful and to the point. My students consistently compliment the book for its content and clarity. The only disappointment is that the chapters on each of the four canonical gospels are not structured in a way that mirrors their narrative shape. The struggle to lead students through the worlds created by the gospels and to present relevant critical issues at the same time is most difficult. Powell balances these concerns as well as anyone and much better than most. If only there was space in such a textbook to lead students to a discovery of the themes of the gospels instead of listing and describing them. That is a task still left to the instructor, but Powell's book provides excellent support.

Great Introduction

This is a very good book for summarizing dozens of scholarly fields into a coherent 'Introduction' of the canonized gospels. Great starting poing if you don't know much about Q or the M and L material. Sufficient discussion about the characteristics and histories of the four gospels. My only knock against this book is that the author too often makes the statement 'most scholars' in order to back a particular hypothesis - refuting a quote from the book that evidence should be 'weighed, not counted.' Still, I learned a lot from the book and would recommend it to anyone interested in the history of the New Testament texts.

A great introduction to the gospels

Most biblical studies are quite frankly designed for scholars and seminary students. As a general reader, I can unhesitatingly recommend this small volume that helps you understand the basics of the Gospels.
There are three sections for each of the four Gospels, discussing Characteristics (what makes it different from the other three Gospels), Historical background (where, when and why they were probably written and whether Matthew, Mark, Luke and John actually wrote them) and Major Themes (the messages that each writer wanted to get across). Things that the general reader might not be aware of, like the phantom "Q" Gospel that probably provided Matthew and Luke with material and the controversy over whether John or Lazarus was the "Beloved Disciple", are introduced in easy to understand fashion without overwhelming non-scholars. There is also an appendix summarizing the "Gnostic Gospels" which, although I wouldn't count on finding them in new copies of the New Testament anytime soon, are gaining credibility with scholars (especially the Gospel of Thomas).
I found it interesting and informative.

Wouter J. Hanegraaff is Professor of the History of Hermetic Philosophy and Related Currents at the University of Amsterdam, the Netherlands, President of the European Society for the Study of Western Esotericism (ESSWE), and a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences. Alongside numerous articles, he is the author of New Age Religion and Western Culture: Esotericism in the Mirror of Secular Thought (1996, 1998); Lodovico Lazzarelli (1447-1500): The Hermetic Writings and Related Documents (2005, with Ruud M. Bouthoorn) and Swedenborg, Oetinger, Kant: Three Perspectives on the Secrets of Heaven (2007). He has also co-edited seven collective volumes, including the Dictionary of Gnosis and Western Esotericism (2005) and Hidden Intercourse: Eros and Sexuality in the History of Western Esotericism (2011, with Jeffrey J. Kripal). His latest work is Western Esotericism: A Guide for the Perplexed (2012).

Quid est veritas?

This is an excellent work of historiography, the art that Oswald Spengler deemed the only intellectual possibility remaining to Western civilization. A thorough review of how the words "esoteric", "occult", and "magic" came into employment in the languages of Western Europe, it ignores entirely the content or meaning of the texts that were given such labels. Indeed, we should not expect Hanegraaff to touch upon such topics. When he chose to write a book for Cambridge University Press in the 21st century, he was robbed of his ability to speak of texts as possessing meaning in and of themselves, as opposed to historical interest. But the book that resulted from this Faustian bargain is still great reading as history and good food for thought for religious scholars young and old.

Hanegraaff uses this "radical historicism" to probe into the uncomfortable relationship between Christian universalism and the wisdom traditions of other ecumenes, notably its intellectual forefathers Plato and Aristotle and their late classical interpreters, but also including Brahmins, Druids, Egyptians, and everyone else the writers were aware of. How does one tell stories that are not the universal (catholic) story?

In the first chapter, Western Christianity (pre-Reformation) ends up presenting God as hiding himself to the non-western traditions; a sort of secret, Gnostic God for the Jews and pagans who only becomes publicly knowable in the person of Christ. Considering that the point of orthodoxy in the first place was to preserve faith in God from the evils of Gnosticism, this was unpalatable to many late medieval writers. The second chapter presents their equally dubious alternative: that pre-Christian and neoplatonic philosophy was per se heretical. Taking up this assumption leads us to the unfortunate conclusion that the Church Fathers all across the Mediterranean were misled by heresy. This of course became a favored line of Protestant attack, and by the late 17th century this gives rise to the modern category of "esotericism," into which the dream of the philosophia perennis was shoved. But this category was founded by radical Protestants, on the implausible premise that there were absolutely no lines of dialogue between ecumenes except for the corruption of God's truth by human or Satanic philosophy. Hanegraaff dubs this anti-apologeticism and it becomes the standard academic response; the third chapter of the book is devoted largely to how the resulting construction of "esotericism" became more ornate as it solidified.

When we enter the 20th century, though, the book's project starts to unravel, something that has been noted by other reviewers. If I were reviewing this book for a formal publication I could go on for several pages about why I think this is so. Lacking such an invested audience, I will just attempt a little radical historicism of my own. Today's "academies" of religion developed out of these anti-apologetic schools of Protestant theology that sought out the truth specifically by throwing into the wastebasket all the man-made teachings that they knew to be false. The development of "esotericism and the academy" after the Protestant era, then, is also about the transformation of Western elite opinion about religion as a whole. Over many decades, the bold proclamation of belief in God, Christ, angels and devils was whittled away into nothing. Once all the teachings were equally in the wastebasket, it is not surprising that some religious scholars, for some reason or another, got particularly interested in the reason the wastebasket was invented in the first place.

The result is a chapter differing in tone from the rest of the book, that contains many valid points such as a severe and accurate critique of Mircea Eliade, but is presented in the form of an inexorable progress towards historicism, deviation from which is completely intolerable to the author. We should not be surprised that Hanegraaff quotes at length Henry Corbin's rather cogent argument that historicism is meaningless and irrelevant to the quest for esoteric knowledge, and then cannot manage any reply other than the harried statement that it is "pointless to judge Corbin's work by the criteria of academic historiography", and later, "such normative judgments may be appropriate for philosophers or theologians, but cannot be supported on the basis of historical evidence." Hanegraaff is reduced to throwing up his arms and quite literally asking "quid est veritas?", because in his position as a 21st century Western academic he is unable to turn his eyes towards the content of esoteric knowledge.

I am not very eager about the conclusion of the book, where Hanegraaff, despite himself (specifically, despite his careful takedown of Frances Yates in the previous chapter), becomes weirdly excited about the possibilities opening up for researching what he calls "the polemical Other of modernity", and later indicates by the telling word "gnosis". I cannot claim to know what the historical study of such currents will open up for the de-Christianized academy. Instead of reading the conclusion, though, I would recommend that the reader turn back to the well-designed cover of the book, which shows a scholar with his head in his arms, being attacked by owls and other creatures that he seems to be trying to keep away. I am befuddled that the book's final chapter continually refers to two people named "Gu�non" and "Evola" as if the reader is meant to know who they are, usually without supplying the first names of these two gentlemen, and without ever describing their beliefs in the body of the text. One gets the definite sense that these names are Dionysian ghosts being consciously suppressed from the Apollonian bent of the narrative, and it pleases me to think of them as the owls on the cover.

This One Is For Multilingual Academics with a High Tolerance for Boredom

Wouter J. Hanegraaf's Esotericism and the Academy is a dry as dust reading of a wildly problematic and perplexing corner of Western Intellectual History that in the end sheds no new light on the subject and as an introduction manages to somnambulize the reader on the one hand and infuriate English readers with Latin, French, and German phrases and quotes which are not translated or referenced in translation in the endnotes. The latter was a deeply arrogant and destructive gesture on the writer's part.

Although not a bad book it lacks clarity, a narrative hook, and any sympathy for readers who do not have more than a passing acquaintance with Latin, French, German. If you read the Kindle edition, on a tablet or phone, at least you will be able to look these quotes and phrases up online.

Recommendation: Give this one a pass.

About the Author
The editors Professor Dipl.-Ing. DDr. Dr.-Ing. E. h. Konrad Bergmeister is a university professor at the Institute of Structural Engineering of the University of Natural Resources and Life Sciences, Vienna and has run a consultancy since 1990. He is also editor-in-chief of the journal "Beton- und Stahlbetonbau". Professor Dr.-Ing. Dr. h. c. Johann-Dietrich Worner has been the professor of Structural Engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt since 1995 and was the president of his university until 2007. In 1994, he founded the consultancy Worner und Partner, Darmstadt. Since 2007, he has been the chairman of the board of the German Aerospace Centre(DLR). Dr.-Ing. Frank Fingerloos has been with the German Society for Concrete and Construction Technology (DBV) since 2000 with responsibility for construction technology. Since 2008, he has also a lectureship for special topics in massive construction at the Technical University of Kaiserslautern. He is also active in the DIN standards committee (NABau) for DIN 1045 and Eurocode 2.

Outdated for Event Planners of the New Millennium!

If you are not a professional event organizer planning a non-official function, this book may be of some use to you. However, I found the book a disappointment due to the fact that most of the material including context, venue layout, theme concepts, designs, and especially the photos (mostly in black & white) very outdated. These material would have been useful in the early 80s. Definitely not worth the price it is charging.

Warning to potential buyers of this book...it's pretty expensive for what you get - have to say I expected a gorgeous hard cover and lots of glossy pics but it is NOT like that. Whilst the cover is hard, there is minimal coloured pics. All in all, whilst this book has good ideas I was generally disappointed.

This book would be a great book except for the fact that the author only managed to make half of it in color. A good portion of this book is filled with pictures. Please note that I did receive it in the condition expected and in a timely manner from the seller.

Beautiful & Delicious!

I purchased Martha's special cookie magazine at Christmas a few years back, and it's simply falling apart now because I've made her cookies again and again. I was excited to see this book as a lot of my favorites from the cookie mag are included and the protective book allows me to keep these yummy recipes in one safe place. The photos are stunning - there's a pictorial table of contents (very unique!) based on things like 'soft and chewy' and 'crisp and crunchy' and there's even a delightful section in the back that shows you how to package your cookies for gifting. I simply can't wait to try the all the recipes!

Absolutely... Wonderful!

This is a wonderful cookie book. Martha Stewart recipes are really great. For those of you who are hesitant to buy this book, do not hesitate any longer. The cookies are splendid, the packaging wonderful (there are pictures for every cookie) and overall a great book of combined talent. So far I have tried the honey florentienes; cigarette russes; italian polenta cookies; choco. pistachio biscotti; buttered rum meltaways; thumbprints and Brown Butter Toffee blondies. The last two are the only ones thus far that I did not care for, but others seemed to like them. The rest, especially the biscotti and meltaways were awesome. Tonight, I try the rum raisin cookies...

I have read some of the reviews of this book saying that most of the recipes are the same ones over and over. For those of you who have or will recieve this book, Ms. Stewart points out that most cookie recipes contain the same base elements -- butter, milk, eggs, flour, etc. When you add different flavors, you will get different cookies. Any one who bakes should know this. Add several other ingredients and you will get a totally different textured cookies. Take away an ingredient or two and yet again, another texured cookie. As consumers and bakers we expect this from every type of edible food. This book, nor any other, is any different.

This cookie book is simple and beautiful. Also delicious... the Cookies, not the Book :) I highly recommend.

I love this book!

I have bought 4 copies of this book to give to friends because I love it. It is the perfect gift for anyone who likes to bake. I have been baking one new cookie every week with my son and daughter since we got this book in the summer.
What I love is that there are all types of recipes, simple ones and more complex, with a wide variety of flavors. The book is divided by cookie categories: Light and Delicate, Soft and Chewy, Crumbly and Sandy, Chunky and Nutty, Cakey and Tender, Crisp and Crunchy and Rich and Dense. Each category is accompanied with beautiful photos of the cookies, which are all shown in the table of contents. The book has beautiful layout (as always for martha books) and easy to follow recipes.

About the Author
Yefim Gordon was born in 1950 in Vilnius, Lithuania. He has been researching Soviet and Russian aviation history for more than 40 years and has one of the world's largest photograph and document archives on the subject. A professional aviation journalist and photographer since 1989, Yefim Gordon has published hundreds of features and photographs in Soviet, Russian and foreign aviation magazines. He has also authored and co-authored well over 100 books on Soviet and Russian aviation which are published in seven countries. He is a co-owner of the Moscow-based aviation publishing house Polygon Press Ltd. Translated by Dmitriy Komissarov
