Finally, the towns in New Jersey arose by folk-etymology from Auronge, an Indian tribe, recorded as early as 1645."

I understand with empathy how one reader hoped for a more solemn presentation of philosophy and felt disappointed on finding him

The translator never rhymes unless Goethe does: the German poet wants a lighthearted festive mood and he decorates nearly all his relaxed and casual offerings with abundant musical harmonies, lilting rhythms, and multiple, intricate rhymes to please the ear. I understand with empathy how one reader hoped for a more solemn presentation of philosophy and felt disappointed on finding himself invited to a party instead. But ask yourself: when Goethe honors Hafiz, a medieval Persian tavern-haunting writer of homoerotic verse, by calling him his "twin," isn't that philosophy? When Goethe suggests that his (or Hatem's) girlfriend Zuleika so far embodies the creative love of God that, like the Almighty, she deserves to have at least 99 names, isn't that philosophy? Goethe's groundbreaking book in a new, youthful style disconcerted his early readers, too: after 100 years the first edition still hadn't sold out. But today we can more readily enjoy his wine-loving, gay-friendly, world-alive mentality.You have to relax a little, and then you can savor it.

Great book! A fine translation, and especially valuable for Goethe's essay on the Divan-- very rare in English. Highly recommended for anyone interested in poetry, German literature, and Eastern-Western cultural relations.

not philosophical poetry.

The translations destroy the meaning of the poems with excessive rhymes.there's no footnotes, endnotes, glossery, index, and half the poems are written by Mr.Bidney, really all the poems are written by him.There is no Goethe, or Hafiz left when he got done.He gets one star for the prose ,notes and essays, by Goethe, but even in it he's obsessed with rhyme, and loses the meaning.

Norman Gorbaty was a leader in graphic design in a career spanning over fifty years, most notably as the art director for the legendary advertising agency Benton & Bowles, where he designed iconic ads for Crest, Post cereals, and the IBM Selectric typewriter and groundbreaking covers for Time magazine. After he trained at Yale, Gorbaty’s early career as a fine artist saw his work in the Museum of Modern Art in New York City. Gorbaty continues to be an internationally recognized painter and sculptor and is the illustrator of numerous books for children, including Sleepy Dog.
