This is Leadership 101 - a MUST READ for all new and aspiring leaders.
By Matt Collins
It’s hard to argue with data. And it’s especially hard to argue with data collected from eight million leadership interactions and dozens of studies over the course of four decades. That’s what the authors of Your First Leadership Job bring to the table in every tip, tool and insight provided in the book. And that’s what sets this book apart from other leadership books. It’s a source of What To Do as a leader, and also tested and proven strategies for How To Do It.
If the above paragraph makes this book sound scientific… it is. But don’t worry: it’s also engaging, interesting, and peppered with real examples from real leaders at real companies that make the ideas come to life and resonate with you. An example: in the first chapter of the book a leader shares one of their early experiences as a first-time supervisor, saying “She gave me no feedback of any kind. And then called me the worst boss in the world.” Sound like something you or someone you know can relate to?
Your First Leadership Job also hit a sweet spot in the amount of information delivered. The book focuses you in on the critical things to get right in your early days as a leader, but doesn’t make you feel overwhelmed. Rather, a path to leadership proficiency begins to clarify in your mind – because it’s mapped out on the pages in front of you as well. You will learn how to navigate the transition to leadership, create an authentic leadership brand and have meaningful conversations. Perhaps most importantly, you’ll discover how to be a catalyst leader who brings out the best in others. Then, in section two of the book, you can tackle 11 “mastery and leadership skills” to advance your specific development objectives in things like delegation, coaching and influence.
But it doesn’t stop there. The authors of Your First Leadership Job have a deep background in driving lasting behavior change, so they’ve built in self-insight tools, application tools, quizzes, online content – and the list goes on – to ensure their readers have a way to sustain and apply the learning provided in the book.
I’m not a formal people leader, but I’m keeping this book handy because, to quote the authors, “great leadership takes place every day, in the smallest of ways.” That’s something I want to start right away.

This book is going to put a lot of consultants and coaches out of business!
By Paul W. Thurman
I have been teaching, consulting, and coaching senior leaders for a couple of decades, now, and since around 2010, a great deal of my work--both in advisory work and in executive education--has been on developing new leaders...both getting the ready for their first significant role and keeping their skills honed while they progress to higher leadership levels. The Byham text does a terrific job of demystifying a leader's role--and day job--and also gives useful prescriptions for job success...realizing that not every day will be rosy.
A lot of "leadership books" talk about all of the "good things" that happen with leaders; Byham's text does, too, but it also points out out, perhaps more importantly, how to get up and lead after a leadership "defeat" or challenge. This, perhaps, is the text's most useful feature...which makes it a must-read not only for new leaders but also for seasoned leaders, too. The penultimate chapter on women in leadership deserves much praise, too--not just for the research it highlights but also for the actionable, tactical advice it gives all women leaders on how to breakthrough "glass ceilings."
Not only will this one go on my shelf--and into my lectures--but this is a great addition for any graduate course in leadership, organizational behavior, or strategic management...and I plan to add it to my students' reading lists this year!
