Ann-Louise de Boer is an associate professor and research fellow in the Department of Information Science, University of Pretoria, South Africa. She has BA, BEd, MED degrees and a PhD in curriculum design, and was recipient of the Ernest Oppenheimer Memorial Trust Award for Academic Achievement in 1990. She is also the CEO of Herrmann International Africa, the African arm of the global network of Herrmann International, originator of Whole Brain� Technolog.

Pieter H. du Toit is a senior lecturer in the Department of Humanities Education, Faculty of Education at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. He holds a BA, BEd, MEd and PhD in Higher Education. He is programme coordinator of the Postgraduate Certificate in Higher Education (PGCHE) and the MEd (Educator Professional Development). His interests include action research, learning styles, professional development and education innovation.

M. Detken Scheepers is the Head of e-Learning at the Department for Education Innovation, University of Pretoria, South Africa. She is responsible for the management of the e-learning group, academic staff development in the use of e-Learning and computer-based testing. She holds an MSc (Anatomy) and an MEd (Computer-assisted Education), both from the University of Pretoria.

Theo J.D. Bothma is professor and head of the Department of Information Science and chairperson of the School of Information Technology at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. His teaching and research focus is on information organisation and retrieval (including information literacy), web development and electronic publishing, as well as on curriculum development.

Like her infamous employer, author Junge struggled with unfulfilled artistic dreams: she traveled to Berlin in 1942 to pursue a career as a dancer and ended up taking dictation for Adolf Hitler. "There were very few days when I didn’t see Hitler, talk to him, work with him or share meals with him," she remembers. Junge’s account, undoubtedly a primer on the so-called "banality of evil," is a detailed, efficient and humorless memoir of the three years she spent as Hitler’s secretary. Her tale—full of trivial tidbits and, often interchangeably, chilling observations—draws a picture of a man at once astonishingly uninspired, quixotic and devoted to his cause. It also documents how the Fuhrer served as a father figure to Junge, whose own parents were divorced. She reveals that her post-war disdain for Hitler resembled that of an abandoned child: she hated him after his death, she says, "for his failures." This moral equivocation may seem disturbing in hindsight, but the irony of Junge’s proximity to Hitler was that she was all but shielded from the heinous realities of the war. The most compelling part of this memoir comes near the end when, upon escaping Berlin after the Allied advance in 1945, Junge makes her way from village to village, encountering the remnants of battles. This picture of a fugitive literally running away from herself suggests why Junge, unable to fully accept the nature of her complicity with the Reich, took 30 years to write her story; it also proves far more interesting than learning what Hitler ate for breakfast. 15 photos.

A Viewpoint from an Insider - Traudl Junge

I ordered this book, then her interview on DVD, "Blindspot." Both are fascinating from an insider's viewpoint of the workings of Hitler's staff and watching his brutal hencemen - Goering, Goebbels, Bormann, Keitel, Jodl and many others. Although some of us post-war folks judge that Frau Junge did know about the massacres of Jews, who can say this? Who am I to accuse her of knowing? What difference would a 22-year old secretary make at any rate? Confront Hitler, point an accusing finger at him and die for it? I was in the military and got out when I was 22, and over this 4 years, I would have no idea of what the base commander would be ordering if it wasn't within my security clearance. This is based upon the "need to know." If you don't have a need to know, you don't know. Conjecture is not proof. Being wise after the facts? We all can do that, but it is not proven. Her account was taken by the Bavarian filmmakers, along with another book, to make the film, "Downfall", the story of the last 2 weeks of life in Hitler's bunker.

Terrific book written by a women who had a first hand view of a monster - Adolf Hitler. Traudl has interesting observations when she was released from prison and could see what true freedom meant for the future of all Germany. Great story. Wish I could have talked to her after 1945. WM

One of two must-read books about Hitler

Over the years, I've read quite a few books on Hitler and the people close to him. Given the subject matter and the author's proximity to it, not all accounts can be considered trustworthy and sometimes give the impression of the author trying to wash his/her hands of any knowledge or complicity in nazi crimes.

The two most notable exceptions are Heinz Linge's book and this one by Traudl Junge. Traudl wrote down parts of this book just 10 years after the war, giving the book an extra dimension of her reflecting on what she had herself written decades ago.

One should also catch the interviews with her that are shown as part of BBC's 'World at War'.

Recently, Dr. Marvin Grody sent me a book he had written based on his experience of more than 50 years in the practice of obstetrics and gynecology. He spent 32 years in private practice and 20 years as a medical school clinical professor. . . . The book itself consists of more than 35 individual anecdotes involving a clinical situation. Each is presented in a personal fashion as opposed to the standard medical presentation. Therefore, you sense the patients' concerns as well as the physician's response. A sampling of the chapters includes Mud, Police Call, Marbles, Lettuce, Homage to Boxer Shorts, Blood, and more. With each of these titles is a well-presented scenario of what happened and why the name.

The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists has been actively recruiting medical students to our specialty. One of our greatest assets, we have found, is the close personal bond between obstetrician-gynecologists and their patients. This book gives examples of one physician's intriguing and satisfying experience with his patients.

About the Author
Marvin H. Terry Grody, M.D. celebrated his 60th year as a physician in 2006. Terry was born in Hartford, Connecticut. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Pennsylvania in 1943 and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1946. Terry opened his private practice in Hartford, Connecticut in 1953. In 1985, he embarked on a twenty-year second career as a medical school clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology, first at the Columbia University Medical School, then, for eleven years, at Temple University Medical School and, finally, commencing in 2002, at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He retired in 2006 at the age of 84. Terry has organized and hosted more than 25 medical conferences and has produced 34 educational videos demonstrating advanced surgical techniques. He has appeared as guest surgeon, guest professor or guest lecturer throughout the United States and overseas. His book, "Benign Postreproductive Gynecologic Surgery," was published in 1984 and he has authored or co-authored more than 40 published scientific manuscripts. Terry has been awarded every major national honor his profession can bestow, including recognition as "Distinguished Surgeon" in 2001 by the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons and in 1998 by the Society of Pelvic Reconstructive Surgeons. He has been honored multiple times for excellence in teaching by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and by the universities at which he taught.

Inspiring!

Thank you Dr. Grody for allowing me to view what has been a truly remarkable career. Your book was insightful, sensitive, funny and moving; all the qualities I imagine you possess. The stories you share of your patients were at times comical, at others heart rendering. Through it all, you treated your patients with dignity and compassion. I cried when I read the last chapter which chronicles your illness- "The healer now needs healing." Though perhaps not the way you intended to end your auspicious career, you were given the chance to reflect on your life and share it with others. Thank you!

As Marvin Grody the author of this book was my OBGYN and delivered my 4 children and a person that I would trust with my life, it was wonderful to read his adventures that happened when he lived in Connecticut and then left to assume wonderful opportunities in NY and finally at Temple Unniversity. I could not put this book down, and if you knew Marvin Grody, you would just picture him in each and every case stated in the book!!!!!!!!! I am a better person for having Dr. Marvin Grody in my life!!!!!!!!1
