About the Author

John Bloomer currently develops network multimedia and imaging applications for GE's Signal and Image Coding R&D group. He has experience designing VLSI chips and design automation tools and has developed hardware and software for graphics and signal processing systems. John often lectures on programming for distributed computing with a second O'Reilly book on DCE RPC underway.

I would not recommend this book for RPC beginners

The presentation is very informal and brief. It is very hard for a beginner to have a clear picture of RPC by reading this book.

Excellent fountain of RPC knowhow

The book fills a gap in RPC knowhow, that was much needed in the market place. It is in my humble opinion an excellent text on ONC RPC for UNIX (principally Solaris, but doesnt seem to be limited in any way). I did not find any PC specific solutions, but if one uses ONC RPC the XDR message format should ensure cross platform portability IMHO. I have only encountered one other good source on this subject, but I will not do Mr Bloomer a disservice by mentioning that book here .The author has made a sizeable investment of energy in trying to explain a complex and intricate RPC paradigm. The book gives examples of how to do both simple and some of the more complex things with rpc. I was particularly grateful for the author putting in examples and explanations of how to integrate with event-loops of GUIs, and to also how to do i/o multiplexing in a single threaded application. This book helped me tremendously during intricate debugging sessions to understand some of my problems. I have nothing but praise for the authors efforts. I salute you sir....

All you need to fully understand the details of RPC

This is imho the reference for RPC.
This book keeps the usual high standard for O'Reilly nutshell books. Yes, this should be seen more as a reference than as an introduction or beginners book, though it covers all important topics and pitfalls to avoid.
If you want the best reference and most comprehensive explanation on RPC and how to use it, this is the book to get.
Danger: As with all of the better O'Reilly "reference/nutshell" books: it may not be very easy to read. The book assumes a fair good understanding of networking and protocol issues. I think someone looking for a introduction or beginners guide will be very dissapointed. This is what makes O'Reilly nutshell books good, they fill the sorely lacking area of deep and detailed books covering all gory detail but does not spend a lot(read: anything at all) of space for the beginner. You will have to think quite a lot to understand it and reading it from cover to cover WILL take a lot of time. If you are aware of this and wants a comprehensive book which goes through everything, this is the one to get.
It is easier to read than RFC1050 and does explain some very very tricky concepts/areas which the RFC just assumes are obvious or assumes you should figure out yourself.
I recommend this book.

At the dawn of the twenty-first century, the challenges for the countries on the shores of the Arabian Sea are many: civil war, piracy, radical Islamism, transnational terrorism, and a real risk of environmental and economic failure on both sides of the strait. Yet its strategic importance as a conduit for maritime trade between Asia and the Mediterranean world is as great as it was when Egyptian pharaohs built a canal between the Nile and the Red Sea. Today, as then, the lands around the Bab el Mandeb are as difficult to pacify as the Red Sea was treacherous to navigate.

In Jihad in the Arabian Sea, Camille Pecastaing leads us through the history and geography of the region, illuminating the tests it faces today. He describes the collapse of the Somali state under Syad Barre in the 1980s and details the struggle between the warlord Aideed and the UN and US forces in the early 1990s. He outlines the history of modern Yemen, from the civil war of the 1960s to the reunification process. And he reviews the activity of Al Qaeda in the region, from the assassination attempt against Mubarak in Addis Ababa in 1995 up until the double US embassy bombing in the summer of 1998, as well as examining the preparation and execution of the “naval terrorism” attacks—against the USS The Sullivans, the USS Cole, and the French tanker the Limburg. In addition, Pecastaing discusses how the state of lawlessness in Somalia has led to the rise of piracy in the western Indian Ocean, offering a brief narration of the most spectacular hijackings.

For foreign powers, Pecastaing concludes, the Horn of Africa is a conundrum. The strategic risk is mitigated by the logistic limitations of the local outfits, their lack of capacity to project power outside the region. The costs of trying to impose law and order most certainly outweigh the benefits, as least in financial terms. As long as local violence does not make too much of a splash in the global media, foreign governments will continue to look the other way.

Pecastaing looks at the past and present of the key players in the area, including Somalia, Yemen, Eritrea, Djibouti, the Sudan, and Ethiopia, reviewing the terrorist activities of Al Qaeda, the state of lawlessness that has led to the rise of piracy in the western Indian Ocean, the rise of the radical Shabab group, and the spread of extremist forms of Islam in the south. The author displays a real feel for the land, seamlessly blending history and current headlines to paint a picture of a region that, for most of the past two thousand years, has never quite evolved into the era of the modern state.

Excellent Primer

This book is a very detailed and far-ranging exploration of Jihad in North Africa and the Arabian Peninsula. It has enough details and background to make it worthwhile for one who wants to understand the situation thoroughly, but the number of names, movements, and concepts explored might turn off the casual reader.

Great survey of Jihadi History

Camille Pecastaing's Jihad in the Arabian Sea is a great survey of Jihadi history in Arabian peninsula and East Africa. My research background is in the Levant and North Africa, so I was able to connect many dots to the development of Militant Islamist in the region. Pecastaing's writing style is simple, clear and easily understood. The only problem I had with the bood was the number of names that were unfamiliar to me. I had to stop many times to remember who was who and what their history was. Thankfully I can remember who many of these people are now.

This is a book that delves into BDSM and Swingers. A man and his wife have been married for 10 years and then she starts having doubts about his fidelity. She believes that he maybe having an affair with there young maid. Because of their having a lot of money they have a prenup that should this happen he would be left with nothing. He believes that she is stressed more than usual and so he decides to take her out to the BDSM Club for some action. They have a very good sexual relationship even after 10 years of marriage. However they still go to clubs and have other partners, one usually watches the other during this time and sometimes they may end up having a threesome or foursome. They even have a 24 hour standby that they have "kept" in considerable comfort for when they needed her services on short notice.
This story has surprises that you don't see coming. I really thought it was over the top if you like this type of story. Lots of sex and more sex and even more sex! Not recommended for under 18.

Ok! Here's the thing! If you choose to read this stand-alone, you should absolutely compose and brave yourselves of what you are going to read, and that warning only goes to those who haven't read the novels of Cynthia Dane. Well, my friends you are going to be captivated and HOT!

Inside the world of BDSM, strangest kinks, mistresses and occasionally male subs, the “swingers” lifestyle the Andrews established into their twelve years relationship, was one in a million. Dominating the world of real estate business, Lana and Ken Andrews were the golden couple and the most rich one as a matter of fact. Both of them were thirst for exhibitionism but Lana was more into that feeling, having Ken follow and fulfill that need of hers every moment, everywhere...all the time. They were linked! Perfectly connected to, whatever the one fantasizes or desires, it would be performed from the other! That was what kept their ten years marriage alive. To be carried out each desire! No secrets, no back off! Only pure, unconventional pleasure...and of course, true love.

The hard core, real estate queen and also kinky Domme Lana, tho, has lost her faith and trust lately. Doubt starts to flow through her mind. Did I believe her? Hell, yes! It was inevitable but she confused me also. "A Fragile Wife" didn't written from Lana's POV actually. It had her thoughts but not exactly hers either. It was Cynthia that was trying to put all these feelings and thoughts in my mind all this time. One time I was at Lana's team and then I called her crazy! It was so easy!!!

As for Ken? He was...Well, he was Ken all the time! An interesting man, in my humble oppinion! A man who can switch his pleasure so quick, just like Lana did. A man who's tastes are as much controversially as Lana's were. Both unique and provoking, this storytell has lots of kinky stuff to share with it's readers, to lured them into the whirl of pleasure the BDSM world is given. Cynthia Dane has written it an a very intrigue way that I couldn't put it down, not even once, until it was ended. Fast reading, page turning, call it as you wish! It's going to stick in your mind even when you finish reading it and then you'll need your own release. I'm not into this kind of world myself, but I caught me fantasize every scene and every pose, this couple experienced, not the hard core tho, and liked each one all the same.

Ken and Lana are definitely one of the best couples for this genre, after all!

I bought this because I couldn't get the National Geographic trail map in time for departure and I'm glad I did

Interesting and informative guide. My son is hiking Isle Royale for a week with his scout troop. I bought this because I couldn't get the National Geographic trail map in time for departure and I'm glad I did. This was written by someone who has been visiting the island for over 50 years and has a real love and appreciation for it. Could have done without the description of the wolves taking down a moose! I prefer my nature Bambi-fied.

The best guide to hiking Isle Royale

This seems to be the only guide dedicated to Isle Royale, so we are all lucky that it's a good one. He describes the hikes in some detail and describes the features of each hike well enough so that you can plan what you want to do.

Dufresne divides the book into long hikes, short hikes, and canoe trips and portages. The long hikes are multi-day backpacking trips, while the short hikes are day trips out of the two ranger stations (Rock Harbor and Windigo). The book also has some helpful background information about the park and NPS rules.

My only complaint is that the mileages listed for some long hikes don't capture the whole distance. For example, Dufresne counts the Feldtmann loop as 24 miles, starting at Windigo and ending at the junction of the Island Mine trail and the Greenstone Ridge trail. Sorry, but you have to get back to the boat, and it's another 7 miles to Windigo from that junction. This means that the loop is 31 miles long, not 24 miles.

To avoid surprises like that, pick up the Trails Illustrated map of Isle Royale, which has mileages on it, to supplement this book.

Suskind's previous novel, Perfume, was a tough act to follow, so perhaps he deliberately curbed his aspirations for its successor. Where Perfume was a rich feast of language and vision, this slim novella is a light snack, a simple fable simply wrought. After a childhood marked by repeated abandonment, followed by years devoted to cultivating the lifestyle of an urban hermit, Parisian bank guard Jonathan Noel awakes one morning to find the titular bird outside the door of his rented one-room flat, the presence of which so unnerves him over the course of the day, that he finally goes to sleep vowing to commit suicide the next morning. Redemption comes at daybreak in the form of a rainstorm and the realization that, despite the sadness of his early years, he "cannot live without other people." Like the monster scent-stealer of Perfume, Noel is an extreme example of a social outcast, but despite a few nice toucheshe recognizes his first rush of adrenaline as something he has read abouthis characterization lacks the inventiveness of the former. The verbal flights of fancy that dazzled in Perfume are missing here, although that book's less interesting allegorical affinities remain. A rewarding, subtle work.

Imagine you are an old man so afraid of life that you have spent most of your years alone, living in a small room and working in an insignificant job as a security guard on the front steps of a bank, your only pleasure somehow derived from the monotony of your daily routine. Then one day a living creature, a pigeon, appears unexpectedly on your doorstep, and it shouldn't be there--it is out of place. And this frightens you like nothing has in many years. You flee your apartment (for good, you think). Because of your agitated state you break your own routines; you begin acting strangely, and your perceptions alter. This sets off a chain reaction of encounters in which you, despite your lifelong precautions to the contrary, begin interacting with a world that seems determined to drive you over the edge.
Suskind's "The Pigeon" is subtly meticulous in depicting its protagonist's complex psychological journey. The story is at once free of sentimentality, raw, honest, and yet life-affirming in the most vital sense. While it is reminiscent of Kafka and--most notably--of Knut Hamson's "Hunger," Suskind's novella also manages to glimpse something just around the corner, something almost out of sight, beyond the valley of despair.

Short and satisfying

The central achievement of S�skind's novella is the way it articulates the social anxiety of a man whose childhood fear of abandonment has played out as a lifetime of limited scope, controlling routines and self-imposed isolation. That might sound heavy but it isn't - mainly because S�skind wisely chooses the "free indirect" narrative style (mastered by Henry James). The story is told in the third person, but is nevertheless filtered through Jonathan Noel's gaze and consciousness so that external reality exists only as refracted in his mind. The result is that we see the world as he sees it, but without the unreliability that such a point of view entails. S�skind is thereby able to show us precisely what he wants us to see - both the horror and humour of Noel's experience - and to deliver a climax which remains somewhat objective and thereby inspires hope. Other reviewers seem to have found the ending cloying and unrealistic, but I think they're assuming more than S�skind suggests. Noel and his life are not utterly transformed at the end - he has an epiphany, he loses his fear, but it may or may not last.

Oh man, we need more from Suskind.

I had to get a copy of The Pigeon used after reading Perfume. I read it in one sitting. It's such a gem. I don't know how many pages go by where the main character is just standing in front of this bank thinking, not doing anything. It's riveting. He eats a meal towards the end of the book and I've never read such tasty descriptions of food. And rain, and peeing in the tub, and ripping your pants in public.
I'm going to have to do some searching to get my Patrick Suskind fix. This is one of the most satisfying books I've ever read. It left me on a high for a couple weeks. It's since worked it's way somewhere deep in me, I won't forget it.

this is a scam

The plan is to sell options with a delta of 12 or less. That's fine if you want to generate a small income. The title says "Earn 5 to 10 % Monthly." No stock or ETF exists that will allow a monthly income like that with an option sale sporting a 12 delta. It could only be done by writing an incredibly risky credit spread. The title is a lie. A Great Starting Point !!

I know little to nothing about trading options. However as I'm retired, I am interested in finding a way to earn money from home. So I started looking into trading options and am currently taking an online course . For someone who has a strong analytical mind I suppose the whole process of trading options might be relatively simple. For me, as I started the course, it seemed very complicated and confusing so I came to Amazon for an answer.
This book has simplified a lot of the confusing jargon that I found in the course I am taking. I think the authors keep it simple as they go through the process of selling options step by step. The book is clearly written for anyone who has an interest in trading but has no knowledge of the process. I think it is a great starting point for the beginner who wants to start with a very conservative approach and perhaps develop into a successful trader.
