art to poetry

These essays are a glorious excursion into the depth of color. Each becomes an adventure story combined with poetry. The history and sociology that Mr. Theroux brings into the world of simple RED, BLUE, and YELLOW uplifts and excites. Each paragraph makes you want more and more.

"Is motion the only reality?"

He's one of my favorite writers (recently I reviewed "Laura Warholic," his latest novel and "Three Wogs," his earliest fiction) but he's certainly sui generis. I have no idea how, especially pre-Internet and pre-search engines, he compiled the thousands of allusions, citations, song lyrics, art works, and trivia that accumulate here to explore blue, yellow, and red. His prose style here, unlike his fiction, may be either more accessible or less cohesive for his readers, but if they've enjoyed his novels, they'll welcome these brief, but densely packed, essays.

He raises, of course, many more questions than even he answers. And he knows a lot, such that you'll feel inept by comparison; a common reaction perhaps to encountering his formidably erudite prose. Still, if you want a counterblast to the usual piddle that passes for thought, he'll prove rewarding. As with all his books, it's not to be dashed through, but better savored for its style and contemplated for its observations.

Here's a few that struck me. Blue and green often mix in most languages; Theroux wonders if this may be due to a very recent development of our retinal cones that perceive blue. I'm curious if recent genetics can solve this crux. Also, colors enter languages in the same order: first black and white,then red, and then either green or yellow followed by the other. The fifth color separates the third and fourth, resulting in blue. There's no footnotes or sources given, for if there were it'd be equal to the text itself easily. But, I wish I could find out from where Theroux piled up such arcana.

On pp. 102-03, for example, he goes in one paragraph from yellow eyes in Frankenstein to a Dickens character, Leon Trotsky about Stalin, Arab boys, a film based on Balzac, Catherine Deneuve's sister, a woman in Walker Percy's "The Moviegoer," another in a Garc�a M�rquez tale, Sam Spade, and ends with "the Alaskan Gray Wolf, staring directly at you."

The yellow chapter, compared to the red and blue, appears more bilious and more disturbing, and Theroux seems to share in that color's enigma. (One minor correction on pg. 120: Christo's artistic display of yellow umbrellas "on a landscape in California" appeared not in 1984 but in October, 1991. Blue ones in Japan were unveiled concurrently.) Still, my favorite sentence is here: "And is there not a flow in the streaming tresses of willow trees, in the sweep of their thin xiphoidal leaves blowing in the wind, as delicate as Veronica Lake's aureoline hair?" (138-39) Although the blue section appears to solve any question and hundreds more I may have had about that color, I still did not find a direct reference to why the music's so called, except for an implication that depression matches this shade. I had thought there was a connection between the indigo-picking slaves and their hands, stained with the plant, as they played and sang sad music.

But, that's not found, and neither is, except again indirectly through Eva P�ron, any explanation of the association of lipstick with a particular amorous act in ancient Egypt by women who painted their mouths so! I guess we all end this book with our own further suppositions, half-recalled references, and ideas sparked by such a rich abundance of speculation, memory, and information about what we see all around us but rarely, I reckon, record with Theroux's diligence.

Plagiarized sections leave a bad taste

Reading the excellent "Song of the Sky" by Guy Murchie made me want to know more about the book and him, and googling led me to the New York Times article about how Theroux plagiarized five distinct parts of Murchie's book for this one. That article is an interesting read. It mentions a lawsuit brought against Theroux, wonder how that came out?

Views on News Blog, David Lammers The environmental impact of electronics manufacturing has become a prime concern of governments and people everywhere. A new book written and organized by Professor Sammy Shina, Green Electronics, Design and Manufacturing (McGraw Hill; 2008), provides a highly practical examination of how electronics companies can create products which meet environmental standards. Green Electronics is aimed at managers and engineers; readers who seek a variety of perspectives on how to successfully negotiate the path to a "green" product. It is aimed at teams which seek to develop environmentally benign materials and manufacturing processes. Shina spent two decades in industry after graduating from M.I.T., and has an equally long period teaching under his belt. He now teaches mechanical engineering at the University of Massachusetts at Lowell. Equally to the point, he is the founder of the New England Lead-Free Consortium, founded in 1999 and counting ~30 electronics manufacturers as members. He is, in short, an authority on the subject who doesn't talk down to his readers one bit. How To Think The first chapters of Green Electronics explain the scientific and mathematical underpinning to a successful conversion to "green" materials, products and processes, including quality and reliability concerns. There is guidance on statistical tests that can be applied to green materials and process selection. To weed out the casual reader, perhaps, the book starts out with a mini-course on statistics and sampling, with two key bits of advice: a sample size of 30 "is usually sufficient," Shina advises, and testing should be spread out over different days and times. Shina recommends that a product design team seeking to meet environmental standards should include a member who is a statistician, or who has received design of experiment (DoE) training. He provides a short course on DoE techniques, including problem definition: how to outline the goals of a project and define the quality characteristics of the process or design to be optimized. Shina and his co-authors don't shy away from environmental degradation issues, including the issue that made Massachusetts (in)famous: the chemical "disposal and leaching, with affect on city water supplies and affect on human health." With a view to the future, Green Electronics outlines how to avoid those problems, including what it takes to get away from lead-based solders. The reader learns quite a bit about the guts of RoHS materials, their higher processing temperatures, and the nitty gritty of using green materials. In a chapter on converting to lead-free assembly, contributors Robert Farrell and Scott Mazur of Benchmark Electronics (Hudson, N. H.) describe the conversion to RoHS compliance (lead free) as "one of the greatest changes to the electronics assembly in over 20 years, which exceeds the impact of the more recent conversions of through-hole to surface mount technology (SMT), and high-pin-count lead frame components to ball grid array packages." The lead-free solders require processing temperatures 30-40 C higher than tin/lead based solders, making hot air surface leveling (HASL) more likely to cause thermal damage to the board. I've been reading Green Electronics bit-by-bit, moving from the first chapters written by Prof. Shina to the seven chapters contributed by managers from a variety of well-known electronics companies, most of them based in the northeast area of the United States. I had the opportunity to read the Green Electronics Design and Manufacturing book by Prof Sammy Shina and was impressed by the methods and techniques detailing the practical applications of the green design and manufacturing concepts for both existing & new electronics products as well as the mathematical analysis needed for green conversion in statistics and long term reliability. The book details the tried & true methods to attain immediate results. I find most of the examples and recommendations very easy to understand and follow.

William Edward Burghardt Du Bois (1868-1963) is the greatest of African American intellectuals--a sociologist, historian, novelist, and activist whose astounding career spanned the nation's history from Reconstruction to the civil rights movement. Born in Massachusetts and educated at Fisk, Harvard, and the University of Berlin, Du Bois penned his epochal masterpiece, The Souls of Black Folk, in 1903. It remains his most studied and popular work; its insights into Negro life at the turn of the 20th century still ring true.

With a dash of the Victorian and Enlightenment influences that peppered his impassioned yet formal prose, the book's largely autobiographical chapters take the reader through the momentous and moody maze of Afro-American life after the Emancipation Proclamation: from poverty, the neoslavery of the sharecropper, illiteracy, miseducation, and lynching, to the heights of humanity reached by the spiritual "sorrow songs" that birthed gospel and the blues. The most memorable passages are contained in "On Booker T. Washington and Others," where Du Bois criticizes his famous contemporary's rejection of higher education and accommodationist stance toward white racism: "Mr. Washington's programme practically accepts the alleged inferiority of the Negro races," he writes, further complaining that Washington's thinking "withdraws many of the high demands of Negroes as men and American citizens." The capstone of The Souls of Black Folk, though, is Du Bois' haunting, eloquent description of the concept of the black psyche's "double consciousness," which he described as "a peculiar sensation.... One ever feels this twoness--an American, a Negro; two souls, two thoughts, two unreconciled strivings; two warring ideals in one dark body, whose dogged strength alone keeps it from being torn asunder." In this eloquent collection of essays, first published in 1903, Du Bois dares as no one has before to describe the magnitude of American racism and demand an end to it. He draws on his own life for illustration, from his early experiences teaching in the hills of Tennessee to the death of his infant son and his historic break with the conciliatory position of Booker T. Washington.

Far ahead of its time, The Souls Of Black Folk both anticipated and inspired much of the black conciousness and activism of the 1960's and is a classic in the literature of civil rights. The elegance of DuBois's prose and the passion of his message are as crucial today as they were upon the book's first publication.

Powerful and Progressive - an Important Book For All to Read

This book contains essays written by W.E.B. DuBois. Some of them are very historical and recount the African American events and progess, and some of them are very personal, in which DuBois tells about his own life. I learned a lot from reading this book. For instance, I had always thought of what an awful thing slavery was- a horrible part of America's history- and that is was such a good thing that it was finally stopped. However, I never thought about the implications of life for the ex-slave after it was ended. Here were many African Americans, free, yes, but with what? Nothing. How would they get anywhere without money, education, jobs, etc.? And after freeing them leaders imposed unfair segragation and Jim Crow laws upon African Americans, so they were not really free at all.
Another thing that interested me about this book was the evolution of the slave's religion. It is very interesting to me how DuBois discusses their original religion of magic/ancestor and earth worship,etc and their gradual progression to the Christian religion of their masters, and then back to the beginning in an almost cyclical pattern. I don't think the African-American culture would be the same at all today if it were not for this mix of religious belief, although some would argue about how good it was for a religion to be forced about them and I would tend to agree.
W.E.B. DuBois was a pioneer of African American literature and thought. This book of essays will make you rethink the progress and status of African Americans throughout America's history, and will help you understand and sympathesize much more. I do agree with a previous review's critique that this book has some disturbing anti-semitic passages in it; in fact, a friend of mine wrote her paper for our 20th Century American Literature Class on that subject, so that did point that problem out to me. I find it strange that DuBois can so effectively and reasonably argue for the equality of African-Americans while so irrationably spout such anti-semitic comments. Except for this problem (which should not be overlooked), the book is very important and powerful, and it did and continues to do a lot for the advancement of African-Americans in the US.

Must read for anyone interested in American history and lit.

I can remeber reading this book in my liberal high school for our American lit class and thinking that they just stuck it in for diversity's sake--that black history and American history are separate entities. But as I began to study more history in college I began to realize that American history could not exist without black history and experience--that Dubois' insights into double identity and how racism affects both the reciever and promulgator of racism in insidious ways are crucial to understanding of how America continues to wrestle with the implications of hundreds of years of slavery, Jim Crow and now, more subtle racism.
I haven't read the book in 8 years, but Dubois description of the moment when a black child realizes achieves enough self awarenesss to undersstand that he is "black" and what that means to one's sense of self (at least in the 1910's south) is absolutely heartbreaking.

Du Bois in the 21st century

This is my third read of this American Classic and my first in almost two decades. As I mature in my race and culture I find Du Bois' observation of both American blacks and whites eerily accurate applied to 2016 and beyond. The Souls of Black Folk (my soul) reminds me of the virtues and passion for seeking truth of self. Finally it offers many clues which solve the black puzzle of attaining first class citizenship in America.

Love this book

As a colorist, I like to color things OTHER then trees and leaves and flowers. Don't get me wrong, I do love them, but after a while I like to color OTHER things and I have found I love BUILDINGS AND CITIES... This book is great... nice heavy paper, wonderful and unique pictures.. I do have one question about the pictures.. several have drops of ink around the pictures, randomly placed, not sure if this is a printing error or part of the actual picture and an artistic touch ! It certainly doesn't bother me...

Really enjoy this one! the quality of the paper is good, the concept of a city randomly popping up is fun as is looking for it's mascot, Karl. Would buy again and share as a gift.
