About the Author
Ronald Inglehart is a professor of political science and program director at the Institute for Social Research at the University of Michigan. He helped found the Euro-Barometer surveys and directs the World Values Surveys. His most recent books are Modernization and Postmodernization: Cultural, Economic and Political Change in 43 Societies (Princeton University Press, 1997), (with Pippa Norris) Rising Tide: Gender Equality in Global Perspective (Cambridge University Press, 2003), and (with Pippa Norris) Sacred and Secular: Religion and Politics Worldwide (Cambridge University Press, 2004). Author of almost 200 publications, he has been a visiting professor or scholar in France, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, Brazil, and Nigeria and has served as a consultant to the US State Department and the European Union.

Money well spent

Earlier this year, I finally upgraded to a nice Canon DSLR. Then, after a few weeks of shooting, I basically forgot about it and never progressed to much more than snapshots. This ebook has really helped me pick it up again and learn how to use all of these features I paid for. It’s consistently practical, with explanations that are accessible for a novice like me. There's also a nice balance between technical explanations and creative exercises. Because it’s an ebook, I always have it with me, which is crucial for a photography book because you never know when and where you might need it. I bought a similar print book at one point, for about 5 times as much, and it basically just sits on the shelf. This is definitely the way to go.

With her background as an educator and academic, Katie clearly and expertly explains the basics of using a DSLR camera. She gives concrete examples her readers can put into practice immediately. It gives readers a solid foundation to move beyond Auto mode to get the best results straight out of their cameras without investing a fortune in additional equipment and software.

Superb account of EU state-building

Cris Shore has written a quite outstanding book on the European Union, showing how its leaders aim to create a single European state.
The EU's founders warned us that they sought to destroy the sovereignty and independence of its member states. Jean Monnet wrote, "Everyday realities will make it possible to form the political union which is the goal of our Community and to establish the United States of Europe." Konrad Adenauer said that the original proposal for pooling French and German steel production was "first and foremost political, not economic. This plan was to be the beginning of a federal structure of Europe."
Later, Chancellor Kohl said, "In Maastricht we laid the foundation stone for the completion of the European Union. The European Union Treaty introduces a new and decisive stage in the process of European Union which within a few years will lead to the creation of what the founding fathers of modern Europe dreamed after the last war: the United States of Europe."
In practice, the EU has already gone far towards creating a new state, although it has signally failed to create one that is honest and democratic. As Shore writes, "To most critical observers it seems quite evident that the European Community has acquired most of the characteristics of a state, however much some might wish to deny this." And, "with its single currency, its Central Bank and treaty control over money supply and borrowing, the EU takes on the powers of a sovereign state, albeit a transnational state without a democratic government." As Pascal Lamy, Delors' chef de cabinet, admitted, "The people weren't ready to agree to integration, so you had to get on without telling them too much about what was happening."
The Committee of Independent Experts reported in 1999 that fraud, cronyism, mismanagement and cover-ups were rife in the European Commission, summarising, "It is becoming difficult to find anyone who has even the slightest sense of responsibility." Shore concludes that the Report "exposed ... the extraordinary degree to which patronage, fraud and corruption ... had become established, even institutionalised, within the Commission."

Chris Shore's "Building Europe" is an innovative study of the European Union, and should be taken seriously. Shore is one of the first to jump in the post-EMU debate: now that Europe has almost completed Economic Union, what are the expectations, challenges, and impossibilities with regard to further integration? Shore offers a systematic discussion of the role of 'culture' in the European Union. How has a European identity been created, or not!, among both citizens and civil servants in Brussels? Shore turns out to be quite critical in the end. Europeanism is not strongly rooted among the peoples of Europe. And the elites in Brussels are far from what a perfect European bureaucrat must be like. He concludes that the goal of European federalism, which so strongly depends on some form of common European identity, may be one bridge too far. To conclude, Shore's informed and refreshing perspective on the actual challenges to European integration forms an important contribution to the debate. Anyone who wants to think of tomorrow's Europe may probably want to read "Building Europe", no matter if you agree or disagree with Shore's final conclusions.

Dated, but completely relevant

I'm a mechanical engineer recently out of college, and got this book because I found myself wading in to the world of industrial automation and robotics with my work, and it seemed like one of the cheapest books on the subject out there. It was a great place to start. Despite being written in 1982, I found that almost everything within these pages was still completely relevant in today's workplace. The mechanics, design theory, electrical and system design, control theory, and general layout of this book are an excellent reference. I was impressed by how well the book took just about every subject I had studied in college and applied it to robotics. The other great thing about this book is that it's written and organized in a way so that you can learn everything cover-to-cover, or simply go through the sections that are relevant to you. If I had this book in college, I would have been way more excited about learning some of the material that seemed boring at the time, but is really quite interesting as it applies to robotics.

Great Industrial Robotics Users Guide [1986]

This is a core-text of industrial engineering undergraduate studies- a well referenced, attractively presented, comprehensive users guide [pre-1990] to robotics for industrial applications. Beyond that, is the demonstration of the engineering approach to systems development in complex environments (e.g. business) that has a far wider application.
Topics addressed include: the fundamentals, robot technology (control systems and components, robot motion analysis and control, robot end-effectors, sensors in robotics, and machine vision), robot programming and languages (including an introduction to AI), applications engineering for manufacturing (robot cell design and control, and economic analysis for robotics), robot applications in manufacturing (material transfer and machine loading/unloading, processing operations, assembly and inspection), implementation principles and issues (including safety, training, maintenance and quality), and social issues and the future of robotics.
I suspect that a more recent revised version (if available), would be a similarly useful treatment of the subject.

Informative Introduction

This book helps explain a lot of the basics of how extrusion dies are optimized for superior cooling and flow performance. It gets into a good level of detail but is not written with too high a required knowledge going into the book. It is useful for any entry level engineer or tool designer in understanding more about the process. I purchased this as I work in the plastics industry and desired to get a more in depth mathematical understanding in order to solve some real extrusion problems, such as warping during cool.

The book starts with basics of material properties and how they interact with extrusion. It then goes into basic flow equations, not much more than you probably got in college, but then expands it to topics such as Melt Fracture. Then it goes into the CFD, or flow field, part when they talk about optimizing shape of the die to improve the velocity profile.

The meat of this book is in its discussion of various die designs for monoextrusion and coextrusion of thermoplastics and elastomers. There is then a short 10 page section on heating of the die.

The ending is on basics of calibration, operation, mechanical design, and maintaining of dies.
