About the Author
Linda Williams is Professor of Film Studies and Rhetoric at the University of California, Berkeley. Her books include Screening Sex and Porn Studies, both also published by Duke University Press; Playing the Race Card: Melodramas of Black and White from Uncle Tom to O. J. Simpson; Viewing Positions: Ways of Seeing Film; and Hard Core: Power, Pleasure, and the "Frenzy of the Visible." In 2013, Williams received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society for Cinema and Media Studies.

Cultural criticism at its best -- clear, engaging, entertaining, intelligent. This book will delight fans of the remarkable television series The Wire with its telling insights while it also persuades the reader of its larger claims for the importance of melodrama's aspirations towards justice in a world it shows as often relentlessly unjust.

Reading On The Wire brings us back to the complexity of characters we enjoyed viewing over five seasons of this great TV series. Once again we observe them struggle to make sense of the various institutions of urban life in Baltimore. Linda Williams argues that the characters and the institutions of each of these seasons do not, as some have argued, create a classical Greek stage; rather their lives can best be understood as melodrama. Drawing heavily from her earlier acclaimed study of the history of America genres as melodrama, Playing the Race Card: Melodramas of Black and White From Uncle Tom’s Cabin to OJ Simpson, Williams gets us to better understand Omar, Bubbles, Major Daniels, detective McNulty and the other memorable personalities. For anyone who knows the HBO series this read is a must. For those not familiar with the TV series, this engaging book will most certainly lead you to immediately order season one of The Wire
