The Physical Attractiveness Phenomena (Perspectives in Social Psychology), by Gordon L. Patzer

Physical attractiveness phenomena permeate society with somber ramifications. Correspondingly, practical applications of physical attractiveness phenomena are extensive. The consequence is that almost every person can benefit from knowledge about research on physical attractiveness. Supportingresearch material provides valuable information for persons established in their careers, as well as those preparing for a career. Similarly, parents at all stages of their life cycle should be cognizant of how physical attractiveness impacts the psychological and physiological development of children. Because no one is isolated from physical attractiveness phenomena, knowledge of this material should be imperative for everyone.

This book consolidates research that specifically addresses physical attractiveness. The first summary was a classic review presented over 10 years ago (Berscheid & Walster, 1974). Since then the research literature has continued to grow, but no comprehensive review has again been published. Even though research summaries have been presented in a compilation of psychological abstracts (Cash, 1980), and in a discussion of stereotyping literature (Adams, 1982), the study of physical attractiveness phenomena is due for a comprehensive account and an analysis of the extensive, divergent research.

As expressed above (and as noted in the next "From the Author"comment section within this Amazon "Author Page" information),this scholarly book presents a comprehensive summarization of scholarly-scientific research concerning the importance of a person's physical attractiveness (as of the date of its publication). Since its publication, researchers and editorial staff in diverse disciplines have respectively cited it in their research and reviewed it in their journals. Published in 1985 it is now out of print and out of stock from the publisher (Plenum Press in NYC), but various entities continue to sell it on the Internet.

From the Author
This book, The Physical Attractiveness Phenomena, presents factual and accurate information concerning the psychology and sociology of a person's physical attractiveness, based mostly on referenced research articles published in peer-reviewed, scholarly, social science journals. However, please note before purchase that while its content is still accurate and pertinent today, this book was published in 1985 by the publisher (Plenum Press in New York City). And, as the author's first (of six) published books in subsequent years, the text in this 1985 book is written in academic style that can be considered dry and at times grammatically awkward writing.

Phenomenon ? A Drab and Uninspiring Work
By A Customer
Amazing that this work was even published. A tribute to all that is wrong with so-called "research" by professors in America at our universities. Phenomenon? The conclusions of the book are at the same time both obvious and irrelevant. Clearly a book not worth a re-print.

A Master of The Obvious
By A Customer
The author purports to be a master of a topic that does not excite the reader nor does it break any new ground. Pompous but not profound.

Master of The Obvious
By A Customer
I recently saw a number of quotes in the paper from his book, and felt the need to respond. I bought this book some time ago and was very disappointed. I am in complete agreement with the other reviewer of this book. I reluctantly give this book 2 stars. This work does not cut any new ground at all. The book takes a well known set of observations no where. A few good lines here and there, for soundbites on TV or quotes in the paper, but not much else with any real depth that is new, beyond that which we all knew in second grade. The author writes in such a way as to hold himself as an "expert" in this area, but his analysis and observations are so obvious that they are meaningless to the thoughful reader. Clearly a book for those people raised by the television and looking for a 15 second sound bite. I definitely would not recommend this book. The writer comes across as self absorbed and pompous.
