Brother Athelstan meanwhile has been summoned to the monastery at Blackfriars, tasked with solving the murder of his fellow priest, Brother Alberic, found stabbed to death in his locked chamber. Athelstan would rather be protecting his parishioners at St Erconwald’s. Instead, he finds himself investigating a royal murder that took place fifty-four years earlier whilst the rebel leaders plot the present king’s destruction.

What does the fate of the king’s great-grandfather, Edward II, have to do with the murder of Brother Alberic more than fifty years later? When he finds his own life under threat, Athelstan discovers that exposing past secrets can lead to present danger.

Some surprising twists and speculations to an age-old mystery
By Texas Reader
Another great medieval mystery by the master of medieval mysteries: Paul Doherty (aka PC Doherty).
This is book number 16, and newest book, in the Sorrowful Mysteries of Brother Athelstan.
Former soldier, present priest, and brilliant detective, Brother Athelstan solves the most complex of mysteries that occur in and around late 14th century London.
It is 1381, London, England, and a mystery from over 50 years earlier rears its ugly head plunging diminutive, Dominican priest and detective, Brother Athelstan, into a dangerous search that could cost him his life.
In this latest case, young King Richard II has asked the Church to canonize his great-grandfather, King Edward II, a man who was forcibly toppled from his throne and thrown into prison only to be murdered in a most horrifying way by his wife, Queen Isabella and her lover, Mortimer, and their followers. Or was he killed? Did he perhaps escape?
The case of King Edward II (died 1327) is a mystery that to the present day has never been truly resolved. Modern scholars doubt the story of the King's method of murder, but no one is for certain if he died that day or not. And if not, then who was buried in his tomb?
In this novel, a delegation from Rome has arrived at Blackfriars, the Dominican mother house in England, to investigate the king's life and death. And, if the facts bear out, then recommend sainthood.
Their task is complicated by the peasant rebel armies who want the present king, all foreigners, and anyone who sides with them dead. The streets run red with blood of the murdered. Then, the murders began to strike the monks at Blackfriars.
Prior Anselm calls on Athelstan to solve the murders. With his good friend and Royal Coroner, Sir John Cranston, Brother Athelstan begins to unweave the plot and the twists and turns will leave you in great anticipation.
But, the path is dangerous, and very early into his investigation, attempts are made on Brother Athelstan's life. Despite these threats to his life, he will plod on and discover the truth to the present murders.
And the mystery of King Edward II? You must read to find out.
Brother Athelstan will not fail, and he does it all without CSI, rather using his own powers of deduction. A much more satisfying entertainment than TV and special effects could ever offer.
You won't be disappointed in this book.

Athelstan Disappoints!
By Dr. KnotHole
I had been eagerly awaiting this novel: the possibility of Athelstan's "participation" in the Peasant Revolt had been foreshadowed in at least the previous three novels. Unfortunately, the novel focuses far too much on the fate of Edward II. Don't get me wrong; that is indeed a fascinating subject, but not during the Peasant Revolt. The premise of Athelstan sitting around debating past events about Edward's possible escape to Italy simply does not make sense, especially because the men of Saint Erconwald's have disappeared. I would expect Athelstan to search assiduously for his parishioners rather than to debate the minutiae of an Edward II mystery. Admittedly, some might find the investigation into Edward a satisfying connection with Athelstan's duties of a monk, but I found it distracting.

The Revolt is Great
By R. Peabody
The moment finally arrived in The Great Revolt. It was worthy of all the build up in the previous several novels with Brother Athelstan. I enjoy All the noted characters in this novel and was pleased to find there are still surprises to be found in these characters. This is a great read.
