Tips and tricks 'from a friend'
By K. Benny
In the usual Scott Kelby style he write these books as a collection of pointers to a friend photographer. Every page in all three books are written with one pointer or tip on each page. As Scott writes in the prelude:

"If you and I were out on a shoot, and you asked me, 'Hey, how do I get this flower to be in focus, but I want the background out of focus?' I wouldn't stand there and give you a lecture about aperture, exposure, and depth of field. In real life, I'd just say, 'Get out your telephoto lens, set your f/stop to f/2.8, focus on the flower, and fire away.' You would say, 'OK,' and you'd get the shot. That's what this book is all about. A book of you and I shooting, and I answer the questions, give you advice and share the secrets I've learned just like I would with a friend, without all the technical explanations and without all the techno-photo-speak."

This being said, this also means that he doesn't dwell deeply within each tip or pointer explaining _why_ everything works as it does. This is for the reader to find out researching the topic further in other reference books.
Surprisingly to me, this works very well! I thoroughly enjoyed reading these books and I would say that I have become a much better photographer reading through all the tips.

Book one is quite general in topic, spanning from how to create really sharp photos to a description of wedding photography. This book is, according to me, a must have in every digital photographers bookshelf. This book is also clearly aimed at beginner photographers.

Coming to book 2 and 3 they differ a bit, especially of how they are written. These books also have the 'pointer and tip' layout, but more detailed information can be found here. Book 2 for example describe thoroughly which gear to use when using flash and how to set up your mini-studio and book three goes even further on how to shoot specific subjects.

This box set offer any digital photographer a helicopter view of how to use your digital camera in the best way to get 'professional' photos. Primarily these books - as all Scott Kelby books - offer small insights of what to think about when shooting digital photos. Kelby also does this with a huge amount of humor, making all his books a joy to read.

Kindle Version Difficult to Use
By Bryansay
This review is specific to the Kindle version of the box set. These are great books. So good, in fact that I bought the Kindle version for my iPad even though I already own a set of print edition. I intend to use this as a reference while traveling with my camera.

Despite my enthusiasm for the content, the Kindle edition set is very difficult to use. All three books are delivered as a single file, but the table of contents pulled up by the menu only refers to book one. To find the contents of book 2 & 3, one must search or manually scan the pages. This issue renders the Kindle book very difficult to use as a reference.

Updated: Amazon informs me that the only option is to contact the publisher or take a refund. With regret, I have accepted a refund and will continue to use the print edition. I cannot recommend that you buy the kindle edition of this set.

Good info for DSLR Beginners
By Byron Dillard
These books are aimed a novice DSLR users. If you've done much photography or read up on the subject, you won't find much real new material in here. Fortunately, Scott Kelby avoids the traps of getting bogged down in the operational specifics of the equipment he is discussing (this is not a rehash of the Owners Guide). The books are to the point, light hearted and fun (with lots of the usual Kelby humor).

Amy Finds Herself
By daffydl
Amy is unaware of how attractive men find her. She doesn't believe her husband when he tells her. This is one sexy story of how Amy finds her sexiness. After a couple of highly erotic, sexy encounters, she finally believes her husband, but decides he's the only one for her.

Love Sylvia's writing.

Great visual introduction to key philosophical problems
By Johanna Draper Carlson
Depending on who’s behind them, non-fiction comics can be fascinating and educational, or didactic and boring. Thankfully, The Cartoon Introduction to Philosophy falls firmly into the first category. I attribute that to the crediting of Kevin Cannon as both artist and co-writer. It’s clear that a visual presentation of the material has been kept in mind throughout. The other co-writer, Michael F. Patton, brings the subject matter, since he’s a philosophy professor.

As demonstrated by the cover, the metaphor throughout the book is a journey down the river of philosophy. That allows for various imaginative, entertaining images (as well as the occasional talking fish, commenting archly). Although the text primarily drives the book, there are plenty of strong visuals to enhance, emphasize, and expand on the words.

Our narrator is Heraclitus, one of the pre-Socratic philosophers, given a friendly face and active demeanor by Cannon. He explains early on that philosophy is the pursuit of wisdom, and to investigate that, we’re going to find out what other philosophers thought through history. He’s a great choice for the imagery, since he’s the one that first said, “It is not possible to step twice into the same river.”

In addition to the historical framework, the book is arranged around a collection of the most famous problems tackled by the field over the years:
* logic — looking at what makes an argument successful, and watching Aristotle climb a mountain through a chain of true premises
* perception — examining how we know what we believe, and meeting Descartes and his skepticism in a prison metaphor
* minds — Plato guides us in exploring mind/body dualism, and a tiny Leibniz explores the brain and drives Descartes in one of the most creative sections in the book
* free will — determinism on a yacht trip
* God — exploring religion with logic
* and ethics — what choices we should make about how to live

I appreciated the way that it was acknowledged early on that the canon, the best-known philosophers, makes for a “testosterone-heavy line-up”. As we meet a new philosopher, there’s a half-page biographical sketch with life dates, a representative quote, a summary of his importance, his location, his most famous work, and a fun fact. It’s a lot of info in a small space, made graphically interesting and easy to find on a flip-through. (Review originally posted at ComicsWorthReading.com.)

An Exuberant Canoe Ride Down the River of Western Thought
By Anthony Vacca
Why is an introduction to philosophy important? Simply enough it is an introduction to thinking logically about what you as an individual actually believe when it comes to topics such as God, free will, ethics and even your own mind. Michael Patton and Kevin Cannon's Cartoon Introduction to Philosophy covers each of these topics, including a chapter on logic itself, by dipping the adventurous reader's toes into the works of some of Western Civilization's premier thinkers. All of this is achieved through a light-hearted canoe ride down the river of knowledge with Heraclitus doing double duty as guide and paddler. Along the way he gives the reader the broad-strokes of Western thought by enlisting the help of lively animated renditions of personalities such as Kant, Plato, Hume, Spinoza, Locke - even Nietzsche can be found skulking about like a goth kid. In no way a chronological account of the discipline, Patton does one better by showcasing the back-and-forth conversational nature between the texts and ideas that continually shaped art, governments, laws, sciences and mathematics over the past give-or-take 3000 years. I imagine this book would make for a fun, accessible text for the many virgin thinkers bumbling their way into their first freshman philosophy course. And as Heraclitus points out in the introduction to the book, philosophers depend heavily on metaphors and hypothetical scenarios to explain their reasoning, so bringing the field of study to a visual medium feels axiomatic. Even though much of the subject matter was familiar to me, the crisp artwork and humorous dialogues between the philosophers made for an entertaining and intellectually meaty read. Very well done.

Informative Book, Lively, Masterfully Rendered
By Doodlehead
This was a highly informative and humorous book. Aside from capsulizing the major figures in philosophy, the book has continuity as a story. I found the lighting of scenes excellent as well, masterfully rendered. I've been a fan of Kevin Cannon's work for over a decade now and it's great to see his continued progress as an illustrator.

Review
"The standouts are the three central pieces: Kate Osias’s 'The Unmaking of the Cuadro Amoroso,' in which an enclave of prodigies takes revenge on imperial war machines; Olivia Ho’s 'Working Woman,' reexamining Frankenstein’s monster amid the multicultural power brokers of Singapore; and Robert Liow’s 'Spider Here,' a hard-SF adventure with a suicide bomber, illegal fights, and a disabled schoolgirl protagonist. Even the slighter stories have the craft, perspective, and components that merit savoring, and the finest would be worth considering for any year’s best anthology." —Publishers Weekly

Steampunk done right.
By liz
Steampunk is about finding that fascinating intersection between fantasy and science fiction, where futuristic technology not only meets, but becomes, magic—animals fused with robotics, working airships, myths embodied in a mystical combination of art and science. The SEA is Ours is about bringing together the already wide world of steampunk with the wonderfully diverse and vivid Southeast Asian worlds imagined by authors from that region. For anyone who is used to thinking of steampunk a la Scott Westerfeld, Cherie Priest, or Elizabeth Bear, The SEA is Ours makes no bones about its de-centering of Europe and the U.S., and its stories’ reliance on regional history and myth with little introduction for the outside reader. And it does all of this while collecting well-written stories from a wide range of perspectives.

The stories in this collection hail from the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, and more. From Marilag Angway’s “Chasing Volcanoes,” about an airship that refuels via active volcanoes in the Philippines and takes on an unexpected cargo, to Alessa Hinlo’s folklore-inspired tale of European encroachment into the Philippines in “The Last Aswang,” to Olivia Ho’s noir gears and gadgets story that brings to mind an urban Frankenstein in “Working Woman,” this collection has something for everyone who loves steampunk or myth or both at the same time.

In The SEA is Ours writers take on themes often applied to the region on their own terms, exploring fantasies of flight, the clash of worlds, past lives, and ideas of progress. Many of the stories use personal relationships, particularly siblings, to explore the duality of nations struggling to define themselves while being subject to decades, and even centuries, of outside pressure. In “Between Severed Souls,” Paolo Chikiamco imagines one family’s struggle to right the perceived wrongs of history projected onto the greater history of Spanish imperialism in the Philippines, where technology and folklore come together in the life of an artist who has lost his wife, and allow him to confront the past in these many layers.

All stories in this collection, though, are as vibrant and varied as their sources and the people they represent, and imagine a strong history and stronger future for the region. Any reader used to United States or European-centered steampunk should definitely check out this collection for a new take on an endlessly varied subgenre. Readers interested in the intersection of science fiction and folklore will definitely enjoy the stories in The SEA is Ours, while those who like to see representation of many types of diversity will enjoy this collection’s inclusion of not just cultural, but ability and gender diversity as well.

I appreciated this nice change of pace
By Yzabel
[NOTE: I received a copy of this book through NetGalley, in exchange for an honest review.]

An interesting change of setting, mixing south-eastern Asia culture and various other aspects to engineering and more “steampunkish” elements. I appreciated this nice change of pace, so different from the typical corset & goggle aesthetics: though I still love the latter, variety is always good, and the whole steam/mechanical technology shouldn't be restricted to European or American settings.

Descriptions and characters mostly felt real enough, and I had no trouble imagining what their surroundings looked like. Some stories used “foreign” words whose meaning wasn't too difficult to guess, so it added to the immersion factor while not being overly confusing. A certain dichotomy also permeated this anthology, though in a harmonious way, in that several of the stories mixed technology with traditional or supernatural aspects: the Westerners' cold, rational technology as opposed to a technology combining magic or spirits to science. As simplistic as the first may seem, it still flowed well enough for me.

What I found lacking in this anthology is something I find both very difficult to achieve as a writer, and lacking in short stories in general: it came with a lot of excellent ideas, character concepts and backgrounds, but tended to leave the reader to dry by cutting off abruptly the narratives. I kept expecting either more of a punchline at the end of stories, or to learn that those had also been developed / were to be developed into novellas or novels later. As a result, I more than once reached the end of a story thinking “am I missing a few pages here?”

Favourite stories:

“On the Consequence of Sound”: though the ending was a bit predictable, I really liked the idea of using music to make items and ships levitate.

“The Unmaking of the Cuadro Amoroso”: exploring various ideas, such as artists that are also scientists (or is it the contrary?), science versus faith, an oppressive government, revenge, and a polyamorous relationship presented in a totally natural way.

“Working women”: a bit too abrupt to my taste in how events unfurled, however I liked its weaving of three women's stories, colliding through mechanical transformations, how society perceived them, and how they acted to (re)claim their own worth and independence.

Formatting: a few typos here and there, however I read an ARC, so this was probably to be expected. I don't know about the printed book.

A diverse collection with several gems
By Heather Rose Jones
Literature is a collaborative exercise between author and reader, with the story emerging from the intersection of intention and reception. That collaborative experience is very different for those who have small versus large intersections of background between the author and the potential readership. (I am very awkwardly trying to avoid using words like “minority” and “marginalized” which carry an inherent sense that U.S. publishing culture is the ruler against which all else is to be compared.) The author who writes from a cultural experience that is shared by a relatively small proportion of their potential readership (whether due to demographics or cultural hegemony) must choose between spending time bringing the bulk of their readers up to speed on unfamiliar concepts or simply lobbing those concepts straight at them with the instructions, “Catch it or duck!”

In some ways, SFF authors who are in this position have an advantage, in that the SFF readership is (in theory) accustomed to stories that plunge them into unfamiliar worlds and expect them to pick up what they need to know from context. We’ve been trained to expect unfamiliar vocabulary and concepts, to be tossed in media res, and to work things out as we go along. There are existing reading protocols to deal with the unfamiliar.

This is “in theory” because SFF readers can be startlingly fixated on specific cultural models as being somehow more real and natural than others. Cultural background is a large part of that, whether it derives from the reader’s own culture of origin, or from the established body of existing SFF literature. And, unlike purely invented cultures like Middle Earth or Star Trek’s Federation, the real-life and literary/mythological elements a non-Western author brings to their SFF are shared by some proportion of their readers, creating a dichotomous experience where some readers will see deeper resonances than others. I’ll be one of the readers who doesn’t necessarily see those deeper resonances, so I can only review the stories in terms of my own understanding.

The concept behind The Sea is Ours is exactly what it says on the label: steampunk stories set in Southeast Asia, written primarily (although not exclusively?) by authors whose own roots are in that region. The title is a delightful play on both the geographic acronym (SEA) and the significant presence that the ocean plays in this corner of the world.

(Note that I wrote up these reviews as I read each piece, so there will be references to “of what I’ve read so far” in places.)

“The Consequence of Sound” by Timothy Dimacali – A coming-of-age story involving the mastery of a music-based levitation technology, giant sky-whales, and the loss of innocence. A vividly-told story with great world-building, although I found the ending too abrupt.

“Chasing Volcanoes” by Marilag Angway – If you’re the sort who enjoys a loving focus on exploring the details and consequences of a fictional technology (in this case, “mining” volcanoes for energy-producing gas), this is for you. There are also political and personal elements to the plot, but they felt more awkward. The ending fell flat for me, not so much because it followed standard rescue-and-redemption tropes, but because it hinged on a mechanical failure of a safety suit that didn’t work for me on a purely technical level.

“Ordained” by L.L. Hill – I have the feeling this story was trying to do something I didn’t quite get. It’s a very atmospheric tale of an encounter between two brothers: one a Buddhist monk, one who has embraced colonialist culture. The steampunk element involves clockwork insects, which are also involved in some fashion in the only thing that seems to provide a moment of overt conflict. But the resolution, if present, is very subtle. The specific religious framing of the interaction made me a bit more willing to accept it as an experiential rather than plot-driven piece, but I’m still certain that I’m missing parts. The descriptive language is so lush and ambitious that it falls over the edge into purple prose, for me. Some of the descriptive passages became so convoluted in their syntax that I had difficulty determining exactly what image I was supposed to be envisioning.

“The Last Aswang” by Alessa Hinlo – A sharp and satisfying tale of international relations involving both human and supernatural players with a violent and somewhat bloodthirsty conclusion. There were a few editorial glitches that I found distracting, but I liked the gradual exposition and foreshadowing.

“Life Under Glass” by Nghi Vo – A sweet and colorful vignette of a specimen-collecting expedition that turns up something unexpected. There’s also a relationship/self-discovery thread in the story. Nicely written but I had a hard time finding a satisfying plot. Neither of the main themes really resolved in any clear way. It was also hard to tie it into the steampunk theme. There was some handwaving about stasis tanks for the specimens, but in a very incidental way.

“Between Severed Souls” by Paolo Chikiamco – This is the second story in the collection so far that sets up conflict and contrast between siblings, one who has adopted the trappings of colonialist invaders and one who has not. This was quite a complex and tightly plotted story, involving a woodcarver and a piece of lumber with magical properties, in addition to something of a love triangle (with one member being dead) and the risks and consequences of warfare. There are mechanical devices and mechanical body parts to bring the steampunk balance to the other more supernatural elements. A well-written and satisfying story overall.

“The Unmaking of the Cuadro Amoroso” by Kate Osias – A dark story about love, relationships, and revenge where the steampunk elements are front and center in the action. The underlying theme is how political powers twist and warp creative people for their own ends, destroying what they hope to use. Bonus points for non-default sexuality.

“Working Woman” by Olivia Ho – The politics and morality of cybernetic people is central to this rather violent story of what people do to survive…and what they do when they decide survival isn’t the highest priority. There are also strong themes of the interactions of distinct cultures in close proximity, the human toll of industrialization, and the bonds that women form against all other differences. Despite the story being considerably more violent than I usually care for (although the violence feels more in the comic-book vein than being viscerally horrific), this may be my favorite of the collection. Excellently written with solid and intricate world-building.

“Spider Here” by Robert Liow – This story did two things very well and the rest somewhat disappointingly. The protagonist is a physically disabled girl who creates bio-cybernetic spider housings (that is, housings inhabited and powered by spiders) for combat entertainments. A larger-scale version of the sort of work she creates appears as her mobility assistive device. Both the vivid description of the technical details of her work, and the very matter-of-fact inclusion of her disability and its compensations are high points. Unfortunately, the story as a whole is disappointing. The opening narrative is too full of unnecessary explanation, while in contrast certain prominent events and characters are introduced that are never really followed up on. And the plot just sort of stops rather than concluding.

“The Chamber of Souls” by zm quỳnh – A group of Vietnamese refugees are rescued from the open sea only to find themselves in the hands of aliens from another world (although the exact relationship of their world to ours is never clear). This initial charity turns dangerous when the refugees are thrust into the middle of an inter-alien conflict and discover certain incompatibilities between human and alien physical requirements. The protagonist goes to extremes to rescue an alien cybernetic entity that carries a valuable component. The conclusion of the story features themes of displacement, adjustment, and trying to reconstruct one’s native culture in an alien environment. In the final scene, the protagonist is offered an option for ultimate integration with his new environs—an option that I found intensely disturbing, but that could be viewed either as a cautionary metaphor for the assimilation process, or as a positive act within a cultural system with different rules and values than my own. I’d be curious to know which the author intended or whether the ambiguity itself was intentional.

“Petrified” by Ivanna Mendels – Some intricate and deep worldbuilding that for me was undermined by the story being conveyed in awkward info-dumps and as-you-know-Bobs. The premise was interesting, but the writing style didn’t work at all for me.

“The Insects and Women Sing Together” by Pear Nuallak – A story of the overlooked strength and creativity of women against a setting of political struggle and war. I particularly liked the way it depicted a variety of women’s relationships and different ways of resisting narrow expectations. Oh, and queerness. I liked that part too. This ties with the Olivia Ho story for my favorite.

Overall, a somewhat uneven collection. The cultural aspect of the theme was strong and consistent, even if the steampunk aspect occasionally faltered. The characters are delightfully diverse within the specified setting, particularly in terms of gender, sexuality, and disability. There were places where a stronger editorial hand would have been useful, but several of the stories shone out brightly. I particularly liked “Between Severed Souls” by Paolo Chikiamco, “Working Woman” by Olivia Ho, and “The Insects and Women Sing Together” by Pear Nuallak.

The Go-Giver, Expanded Edition: A Little Story About a Powerful Business Idea, by Bob Burg, John David Mann

"Most people just laugh when they hear that the secret to success is giving.... Then again, most people are nowhere near as successful as they wish they were." The Go-Giver tells the story of an ambitious young man named Joe who yearns for success. Joe is a true go-getter, though sometimes he feels as if the harder and faster he works, the further away his goals seem to be. Desperate to land a key sale at the end of a bad quarter, he seeks advice from the enigmatic Pindar, a legendary consultant referred to by his many devotees simply as the Chairman.

Over the next week, Pindar introduces Joe to a series of "go-givers": a restaurateur, a CEO, a financial adviser, a real estate broker, and the "Connector" who brought them all together. Pindar's friends teach Joe the Five Laws of Stratospheric Success and help him open himself up to the power of giving. Joe learns that changing his focus from getting to giving - putting others' interests first and continually adding value to their lives - ultimately leads to unexpected returns.

Imparted with wit and grace, The Go-Giver is a classic best seller that brings to life the old proverb "give and you shall receive." Nearly a decade since its original publication, the term "go-giver" has become shorthand for a defining set of values embraced by hundreds of thousands of people around the world. Today, this timeless story continues to help its readers and listeners find fulfillment and greater success in business, in their personal lives, and in their communities. This expanded edition includes the text of the original business parable, a new introduction, a discussion guide, and a Q&A with the authors.

It is all about giving, beautiful and profound message
By Fernando Doblado Rueda
We live in a world where that a leader that is aggressive, fearless and energetic is the best. Maximizing profits is the most important thing . In Simple words to win is the ultimate goal no matter how many lives are affected. the question I ask myself is, in this reality where are the values or the universal principles that have allowed the coexistence of human beings.? And by values or universal principles I am referring to compassion, kindness, patience, respect, sharing, justice, faith, among other. Certainly at least from my point of view values are the foundation upon which you can build not just a company but a whole world. who could think that "the more we give is actually the more we receive. .. But it is true I am a living witness that that rule is true.

But an intriguing question this book brought to me is if I am prepared to receive and if am I aware that I am receiving all the time?

By means of a simple novel this book breaks down the truth about how important it is to give the best of ourselves even if that is not enough to others.
I really consider that this book by far transcends the realm of business ,its message is powerful and applicable to life it self. As it is attributed to be a prayer that was written in one of the walls of the house where Mother Teresa in Calcuta: " give the world the best you have and it might never be enough, give the world the best you have anyway. In the final analysis it was never between you and them, it was always between you and God anyway "

Good Reminer Read
By Brian Ahearn
A very short, easy read that's in story format. A young man, Joe, goes to a known mentor with one idea in mind and walks away with much more. It reminds me of "Give a man fish and he eats for a day. Teach him to fish and he eats for a lifetime." Joe learned to fish using these five "laws":

1. THE LAW OF VALUE - Your true worth is determined by how much more you give in value than you take in payment.
2. THE LAW OF COMPENSATION - Your income is determined by how many people you serve and how well you serve them.
3. THE LAW OF INFLUENCE - Your influence is determined by how abundantly you place other people's interests first.
4. THE LAW OF AUTHENTICITY - The most valuable gift you have to offer is yourself.
5. THE LAW OF RECEPTIVITY - The key to effective giving is to stay open to receiving.

Certainly work reading because it is a good reminder that success depends on helping others first.

MIGHT BE THE MISSING PIECE FOR YOU
By Jeff Richardson
I think this is the big piece missing for many hard working ppl in the business world today. They are out there 'hustling' and 'grinding' all these buzz words out there today that mean the same as being a go getter. They forget to give. Napoleon Hill talked about this at length in Think and Grow rich when he reveled his secret formula. He said set a money goal and then define exactly what you are going to GIVE in return for for the money? U don't get a fire without giving wood. No crop without planting and harvesting. Give to receive.

Excellent Royo.

I love Royo's illustrated books on the yin-yang conflict, such as Dead Moon. This is in the same tradition, and I hope the follow-ups get produced in English at some point.

Ichthyology has traditionally emphasized the systematics, anatomy, and distribution of fishes. In the past, most prominent names associated with the field made their major contributions in these areas. Today, however, people who study fish have more far-reaching interests. They study fish to find ways to improve fisheries or aquaculture, to determine the effects of human activities on aquatic environments, and to test ideas in rapidly developing fields, such as ecology, physiology, behavior, and evolution. Growing numbers of sophisticated amateur ichthyologists desire to increase their understanding of fish they keep in aquaria or of those they pursue with hook and line. Regardless of why fish are studied, those studying them still need the basic vocabulary and understanding of fish biology that traditional areas of emphasis provide and that are found in this book, integrated with recent developments in other areas. Our goal is to provide some feeling for the excitement engendered by recent research on fishes. We also want to promote a sense of urgency for the need to protect fishes and aquatic ecosystems. It is critical that a high diversity of fishes continue to be around to fascinate future generations.

In large part, this book is designed to serve as a text in classes on fish biology. The large number of chapters and the cross-references within chapters provide instructors of such courses with flexibility when assigning readings in the text. The students we had in mind while writing were junior- and senior-level university students. Our goal, however, is also to provide a useful and palatable summary of recent developments in ichthyology for individuals who have been away from the college classroom for some time and for anyone else who wants an introduction to the most numerous, diverse, and fascinating of all vertebrate groups.

This book would not have been possible without the encouragement and help of many people. Initial stimulation and support in fish biology was provided by John B. Moyle, Evelyn W. Moyle, and James C. Underhill (to PB.M.) and by Donald E. Wohlschlag (to J.J.C.). Gary D. Grossman, Donald M. Baltz, and Robert A. Daniels were especially helpful in developing the first versions of many chapters. Numerous graduate and undergraduate students contributed valuable comments on various chapters and/or helped to keep our research programs going while we devoted time to writing. We benefited from discussions with Jeff Graham, Fred White, Tony Farrell, Alan Heath, Carl Schreck, Monica Choi, Stephanie Chun, Hiram Li, Ken Gobalet, Dave Randall, Mikko Nikinmaa, George V Lauder, Laurie Sanderson, Chris Myrick, Cincin Young, Tina Swanson, Carlos Crocker, Shana Katzman, Ann Houck, Ryan Mayfield, Marianne Brick, Keith Marine, Michael Karogosian, Peter Wainwright, and Serge Doroshov. The expert editorial assistance of Chris Myrick and Julie Roessig was especially appreciated during preparation of the fourth and fifth editions, respectively. Ms. Roessig also contributed several original figures to the fifth edition. Trilia Chen also contributed an original figure and editorial assistance to the fifth edition. The reviews of selected chapters in previous editions by Eugene Balon, Michael Bell, David Ehrenfeld, Dale Lott, John Radovich, Arnold Sillman, Randolph Smith, and Paul Webb are appreciated, as are comments by Brooks Burr, Barbara Block, Alfred Ebeling, Kurt Fausch, Malcolm Gordon, Bruce Herbold, Mark Hixon, Paul James, Douglas Markle, John McEachran, Lawrence Page, Theodore Pietsch, Howard Reisman, Frank J. Schwartz, Jerry J. Smith, Timothy Tricas, Linda A. Ward, and Ronald M. Yoshiyama. Theodore Pietsch, Joseph Eastman, Leonard J. Compagno, and Tim M. Berra kindly shared with us their photographs and illustrations of curious fishes. Marjorie Kirkman-Iverson and the staff of our department assisted us in many ways—but especially by keeping the departmental office running efficiently, making it much easier to accomplish our regular duties while the book was in progress. Finally, we are exceedingly grateful to our wives, Marilyn Moyle and Mary Cech, for permitting our marriages to survive and even grow stronger during the many hours over the years we have worked on fish, and to our now-grown children, Petrea and Noah Moyle and Scott and Gregor Cech, for continuing to accept us despite our sometimes obsessive interest in fish.

The following reviewers were generous in providing comments and criticism of various editions of the book: Gary J. Atchison, Iowa State University; Dan Beckman, Southwest Missouri State University; Giacomo Bernardi, University of California, Santa Cruz; William Falls, Hillsborough Community College; Ronald A. Fritzsche, Humboldt State University; Kurt D. Fausch, Colorado State University; Malcolm S. Gordon, University of California, Los Angeles; Paul Grecay, Salisbury University; David W Greenfield, University of Hawaii, Honolulu; Ralph J. Larson, San Francisco State University; Douglas E. Markle, Oregon State University; Andrew Martin, University of Nevada, Las Vegas; John D. McEachran, Texas A & M University; Karina Mrakovcich, U.S. Coast Guard Academy; Jay Nelson, Towson University; Douglas B. Noltie, University of Missouri, Columbia; Steven M. Excellent text
By Sleepypenguin45
I had the very fortunate opportunity to take Dr. Moyle's ichthyology class at UC Davis. We used this book as our text. The book was very helpful, and well explained. Moyle and Cech go into a great amount of detail in this text, and yet convey it in a straightforward and understandable way.

There is more out there
By Dennis Dauble
This is an excellent text for upper-division fisheries and wildlife students. It is nicely organized to include the most important topics and with clear graphics to support the narrative. However, its cost and level of detail are more suited as a reference book for those entering the profession. I might suggest "Fishes of the Columbia Basin" by D.D. Dauble, which is an easier, yet informative, read for undergraduate fisheries student or armchair fisheries naturalist from the West Coast. Alternatively, Fish An Enthusiast Guide by Moyle might be suitable for the general fish person seeking more detail on the topic. Both books are available as paperback in the $15-20 range last time I checked.

Difficult to read, but packed with information
By Ari W
For someone who just got through Biology 1 and 2, I get bogged down with the technical language used in this book (that cannot be found in the index). Once I get past that aspect, it is filled with in-depth information. As a visual learner, I feel that this book could use some more pictures. This would be a great book if you plan on going into aquatic Biology as a major or for graduate school, but the average student could lose focus and interest quickly.
